POST-EXTRACTION INFORMATION

Normally after surgery, you may experience some temporary changes in the mouth and cheek area. Here is what you can expect during your recovery.

BLEEDING: You may experience a slight oozing of blood the first day and night following surgery. If this occurs, fold two pieces of gauze (from the pack you were given) into a square and insert it in the extraction site and bite down for 30 minutes. Repeat this as necessary. There may also be some discoloration in the area which will fade in a few days.

DISCOMFORT: This usually peaks the first night after surgery. Follow the recommendations made to you regarding medication.

SWELLING: It is common to experience a temporary swelling of your cheeks and an inability to open you mouth wide. You may be advised to apply ice packs to alleviate this. Swelling may increase over the next one or two days.

MEDICATION: You may have been given a prescription to control discomfort or an antibiotic to prevent infection. Take the medication on the schedule prescribed. If you experience any rash, hives, nausea, dizziness, etc. discontinue the medication immediately and call the emergency number.

DIET: Soft foods only for the first day: soup, yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, ice cream, water. Begin transition to solid foods thereafter. Do not drink alcohol while taking any prescribed medication or antibiotic.

DO NOT: Rinse or spit forcefully, use a straw, or smoke on the day of surgery, as this may loosen the blood clot and cause bleeding. To promote healing, rinse with warm salt-water for several days after surgery.

DO NOT: Brush your teeth in the area of surgery. After the first date, gentle brushing is recommended.

DO NOT: Pull on any sutures (black threaded stitches). Their placement aids in closing the wound. If placed, you will be given an appointment in 7-10 days to have them removed.
